Rug Size for Queen Bed and King Bed: Bedroom Rug Placement Rules

The right rug size for a queen bed is 8x10 ft, placed so 18–24 in of rug shows on each side; a king bed needs 9x12. This bedroom rug size guide covers every bed, three layouts and the placement rules.

Key takeaways

  1. An 8x10 ft (244 × 305 cm) rug is the best size rug for a queen bed; a 9x12 ft (274 × 366 cm) suits a king
  2. Show 18–24 in (46–61 cm) of rug on each side of the bed and 18–36 in (46–91 cm) at the foot
  3. Run the rug from just in front of the nightstands to past the foot, covering the lower two-thirds of the bed
  4. In small rooms, a pair of 2.5 × 5 ft bedside runners beats an undersized center rug

The best rug size for a queen bed is 8x10 ft (244 × 305 cm), turned so the 10 ft side runs across the bed. A queen is 60 in (152 cm) wide, so that leaves about 30 in (76 cm) of rug on each side. A king bed needs a 9x12 ft (274 × 366 cm) rug; a full bed takes a 6x9 or 8x10.

Those numbers come from one rule: your feet should land on something soft when you get out of bed. This page is part of our how to choose rug size guide; for every size in one table see our standard rug sizes chart.

  • Queen bed (60 × 80 in / 152 × 203 cm): 8x10 ideal, 6x9 minimum, 9x12 in large rooms.
  • King bed (76 × 80 in / 193 × 203 cm): 9x12 ideal, 8x10 workable, 10x14 in large rooms.
  • Side margin: 18–24 in (46–61 cm) of rug beyond each side of the mattress.
  • Foot margin: 18–36 in (46–91 cm) beyond the foot of the bed or bench.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

An 8x10 rug goes under a queen bed in most rooms, placed horizontally so it extends about 30 in on each side and 2–3 ft past the foot. That makes it the queen size bed rug size we specify by default, and the answer to "what size carpet for queen bed" when people mean an area rug.

Place the rug's top edge 6–12 in (15–30 cm) in front of the nightstands, so the nightstands sit on bare floor and stay level. The rug then covers the lower two-thirds of the bed. A 9x12 suits a queen in a room of 13 × 14 ft (4 × 4.3 m) or more, where it can run under the nightstands too. A 6x9 is the minimum: it gives only about 6 in (15 cm) beyond each side when turned horizontally, so it must be shifted lower to leave a visible border.

Does a 5x8 rug work under a queen bed?

A 5x8 rug under a queen bed only works turned crosswise at the foot, covering the bottom third of the bed with about 18 in (46 cm) showing at each side. It reads as a decorative accent rather than a bedroom rug, and your feet still land on bare floor. In a small room we prefer two bedside runners.

What rug size for a king bed?

The rug size for a king bed is 9x12 ft, which leaves about 34 in (86 cm) of rug on each side of a 76 in (193 cm) mattress and covers the bed's lower two-thirds. An 8x10 turned horizontally gives only 22 in (56 cm) per side, which is acceptable in rooms under 13 ft (4 m) wide. A California king, at 72 × 84 in (183 × 213 cm), takes the same sizes but needs the rug pushed 4 in further toward the foot.

Margins assume the rug's long side runs across the bed. King size bed rug dimensions also depend on the frame: a wide upholstered frame adds 4–8 in (10–20 cm), so measure the frame rather than the mattress.

What size rug for a full size bed?

A full size bed takes a 6x9 rug in a small room and an 8x10 if the room is 11 ft (3.4 m) wide or more. A full is 54 in (137 cm) wide, so a 6x9 turned horizontally leaves 9 in per side; shift it toward the foot so more shows. Guest rooms and kids' rooms with a full bed often look better with a 5x8 at the foot plus one bedside runner on the side people actually use.

What are the rug under bed rules?

The rug under bed rules are simple: the rug is wider than the bed, starts in front of the nightstands, ends beyond the foot, and is centered on the bed rather than the room. These are the ones we use on every project.

  • Width: 18–24 in (46–61 cm) of rug beyond each side of the mattress, more in large rooms.
  • Top edge: 6–12 in (15–30 cm) in front of the nightstands, unless the rug is big enough to run under them entirely.
  • Foot: 18–36 in (46–91 cm) past the foot of the bed, or past a bench if you have one.
  • Centering: center on the bed, not the room; an off-center rug is obvious from the doorway.
  • Walls: leave 8–18 in (20–46 cm) of bare floor at the walls so the room does not look carpeted.
  • Doors and closets: keep the rug clear of closet door tracks, and under 0.5 in (13 mm) thick where doors swing over it.

How to position a rug under a bed

To position a rug under a bed, mark the target outline first, then lift one end of the bed at a time rather than dragging it. It is a two-person job that takes about 15 minutes.

  1. Measure and tape. Mark the rug outline on the floor with painter's tape, centered on the bed's centerline.
  2. Clear the floor. Remove nightstands, bench and anything under the bed; strip the bedding if the frame is heavy.
  3. Lay the pad. Place a rug pad 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) smaller than the rug on every side inside the tape.
  4. Lift the head end. With a helper, raise the headboard end, slide the rug under from the side, and lower.
  5. Lift the foot end. Raise the foot end, pull the rug square to the tape and lower again.
  6. Check margins. Measure each side; adjust by lifting one corner at a time, not by tugging the rug.
  7. Add furniture-leg pads. Felt or rubber cups under the legs stop the bed from walking and denting the pile.

For a platform bed sitting on a solid base, place the rug first and assemble the bed on top. Our bedroom layout ideas show where to put the bed before you commit to a rug.

Which bedroom rug layout should you choose?

Choose one of three rug layout bedroom options: a large rug under the bed, a pair of bedside rugs, or one rug at the foot. The first suits most rooms; the second suits small rooms and rooms with good wood floors; the third is a stopgap.

Large rug under the bed

The classic. An 8x10 or 9x12 covers the lower two-thirds of the bed and anchors the room. Best for rooms of 11 × 12 ft (3.4 × 3.7 m) and larger.

Bedside rugs and runners

Bedside rugs placed parallel to each side of the bed, typically 2.5 × 5 ft (76 × 152 cm) or 3 × 5 ft (91 × 152 cm), give soft landings without covering the floor. They are cheaper, easier to clean and work when the bed is close to a wall on one side.

Rug at the foot

A 4x6 or 5x8 across the foot of the bed, with a bench on top. It looks finished in a guest room but does nothing for cold feet in the morning.

Can you put a rug under a bed on carpet?

Yes, a rug under a bed on carpet works if the rug is low-pile or flatweave and sits on a gripper pad designed for carpet. Without the pad, rugs on wall-to-wall carpet creep and ripple within weeks, because the bed's weight presses the carpet pile and pushes the rug outward.

Choose a contrasting texture, such as a flatweave on plush carpet or jute over low-loop, so the rug looks intentional. Skip thick shag on carpet: two soft layers make the bed rock and the rug edges a trip hazard. Our rug pad guide covers carpet-to-rug pads.

Mistakes we see with rugs for bedroom spaces

The mistake we see most often is a rug centered in the room with only the bed's foot touching it, which leaves both sides of the bed bare and wastes the rug. The second is a rug that runs under nightstands on one side but not the other, so the nightstands sit at different heights.

Our verdict on rug placement under bed: go 8x10 for a queen, 9x12 for a king, start the rug in front of the nightstands, and choose low pile so doors and bed legs behave. Soft wool or a wool blend is worth the extra money here more than anywhere else in the house, because bare feet touch it every day.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

An 8x10 ft rug goes under a queen bed in most bedrooms, placed with the 10 ft side across the bed so about 30 in shows on each side. Start it 6–12 in in front of the nightstands. Use a 9x12 in large rooms and treat a 6x9 as the minimum.

What size rug for a king bed?

A 9x12 ft rug is the right size for a king bed, leaving about 34 in of rug on each side of the 76 in mattress. An 8x10 turned horizontally works in narrower rooms but leaves only about 22 in per side. Large primary bedrooms can take a 10x14.

What size rug for a full size bed?

A full size bed takes a 6x9 ft rug in a small room or an 8x10 ft rug in a room at least 11 ft wide. A full mattress is 54 in wide, so a 6x9 leaves about 9 in per side; shift it toward the foot. Bedside runners are a good alternative.

How do you position a rug under a bed?

Position a rug under a bed so it starts 6–12 in in front of the nightstands, extends 18–24 in beyond each side and 18–36 in past the foot, centered on the bed. Tape the outline first, then lift each end of the bed with a helper and slide the rug and pad underneath.

Can you put a rug under a bed on carpet?

Yes, as long as the rug is low-pile or flatweave and sits on a gripper pad made for carpet. Without that pad the bed's weight makes the rug creep and ripple. Avoid shag on carpet and pick a contrasting texture so the layered rug looks deliberate.
