How it works
Net area is length × width for floors, or the sum of wall widths × height minus about 21 sq ft (1.9 m²) per door and 15 sq ft (1.4 m²) per window. We add the wastage your layout needs — 10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal, herringbone and large formats, 20% for rooms with many cuts — to get the gross area to order.
Tiles = gross area ÷ the footprint of one tile including its grout joint, rounded up; boxes round up again. Grout follows the industry formula (tile length + width) ÷ (length × width) × tile thickness × joint width × 1.6 kg/L, plus 10%. Adhesive uses 3 kg/m² for small tiles, 4.5 kg/m² for standard sizes and 6 kg/m² for large format, which needs a thicker bed and back-buttering.

FAQ
Order 10% extra for a straight or brick-bond layout and 15% for diagonal, herringbone or large-format tiles — more if the room has alcoves, curves or borders. Keep a spare box after the job for repairs, because dye lots change between production runs.
A 12 × 24 in tile covers 2 sq ft, so 100 sq ft is 50 tiles before waste. With a 1/8 in grout joint and 10% wastage you should order about 55 tiles — usually 7 boxes of 8.
Add up the widths of the walls you are tiling, multiply by the tiled height (usually to the ceiling, about 8 ft), subtract the window if there is one, then add 15% because showers involve many cuts around niches, valves and corners.
Yes — area, wastage and tile footprint work the same. Wall tiles need less adhesive per square meter than floor tiles, and small handmade tiles such as zellige need wider joints and more grout, which the calculator accounts for.
